What’s the MyGym Daily Dose?

At MyGym you’ll see a board by the changing rooms with the words… ‘Exercise is medicine, here’s your daily dose’ written on it. On the board there’ll be a suggested workout for you to follow.

There’s no obligation for members to follow the Daily Dose - it’s just a suggestion. Some members follow it exactly. Others use it as a basis for inspiration, taking parts from it and not doing others. Some people will take a picture of it and save it for a later time.

The idea came from the CrossFit ‘WOD’ (workout of the day) approach.

What kind of programming is the Daily Dose?

At MyGym in Stockport we believe in something known as ‘GPP’ - general physical preparedness. It’s reflective of the kind of facility we are.

What GPP means is that we don’t specialise in one small area of fitness, neglecting the rest. We train everything - we train for strength, muscle building, cardio, flexibility, weight loss, joint health, core strength etc. What this means is that one day on the Daily Dose you may be doing a lot of cardio, the following day a lot of strength work, the day after might be a mixture of both.

No two workouts are the same, and no two days are the same.

If you want to train to be generally fit, it’s perfect. It’ll challenge you to do things you’d not normally do, it’ll demand more of you than you would yourself, and it’ll teach you a lot about real exercise, not the version where you sit on a machine and push out a few reps, before moving onto the next one and doing the same.

Exercise is about moving your body in different ways, in different planes of movement, lifting different amounts of weight, performing different types of cardio. If your exercises becomes static, it’s ineffective and pointless. Your body needs a challenge.

Here’s an example of the kind of workout to expect on the Daily Dose…

What if you I don’t understand the exercises on the workout?

Don’t worry about it! There’s always someone around to ask for help.

At first a lot of the exercises and instructions might look as if they’re written in a foreign language, but you’ll soon learn what they all mean! Nobody knows what these exercises are until they ask, they do them and they learn. Within a couple of weeks you’ll understand all of the terminology, and you’ll walk into the gym and will know exactly what they all are.

As mentioned though, there’s always a gym staff member around so if there’s something you don’t understand, just ask one of us and we’ll be able to show you the exercises and how to do them.

What if I’m not strong enough?

You are!

We don’t put any weight guidance on the Daily Dose, so you can select a weight that suits your abilities. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner to weight training, or have been a gym user for years, the Daily Dose can be scaled appropriately for your fitness level.

How the Daily Dose helps you to get the most out of the gym…

We realise that if you’ve joined MyGym from one of the big, soulless corporate gyms that are dotted all over the place nowadays, you might be unsure about what to do in there. When you’re not spoon-feed ‘exercise’ in the form of a chest press, a leg press, an ab crunch, what do you do?!

The Daily Dose is there to help you learn how to train properly. It’ll give you an understanding of what to do in the gym, how to do it, how to structure your workouts and how to get the most from the equipment. We’re the best and most varied gym in Stockport when it comes to equipment, so by following the Daily Dose you’ll get to use more of it and enjoy a new way of training.

Next time you’re in, take a look at the Daily Dose board, give the workout a try and see how you get on! Even if you only do a Daily Dose workout once or twice per week, it’ll help you to get the most from your training!
